St Mark’s Hospital in London was founded in 1835 by the surgeon, Frederick Salmon. St Mark’s Hospital is internationally recognised as a leading centre of excellence in treating all areas of gastrointestinal disease. It is devoted to improving the lives of individuals affected by complex bowel diseases, which it achieves through a commitment to research, education and the dissemination of clinical excellence.

St Mark’s Hospital Foundation funds life-changing, pioneering medical research at St Mark’s Hospital. This research is improving the survival and quality of life of bowel disease patients living locally in Harrow, but also throughout the UK: 60% of the patients treated at St Mark’s have been referred by other UK hospitals. The Foundation also funds St Mark’s Academic Institute, which provides advanced education programmes for medical professionals. Together, St Mark’s Hospital and the Academic Institute attract practitioners from the UK and overseas, enabling the sharing of best practice.

The Foundation has a vital role to play raising awareness of the Hospital and, crucially, generating the funds that enable research projects to be undertaken. One project which needs continued financial support is our Surgical Robotics Research Programme. Donations received to date enabled St Mark’s to take delivery of a Da Vinci Xi surgical robot in 2018. This advanced surgical robotics platform, which is controlled by an expert surgeon, is enabling St Mark’s surgeons to deliver minimally invasive, precise surgery. It is the only surgical robotics platform in the UK dedicated to bowel surgery!
